If your chest is underdeveloped, or your breast size has decreased as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or aging, breast augmentation surgery can enhance your chest contour and give you a more defined, proportioned look. At Dermatology + Plastic Surgery, double board-certified plastic surgeon Rebecca Novo, MD, and board-certified dermatologist Anita Saluja, MD, provide a variety of breast enhancement procedures for residents of Melbourne, Viera, Brevard County, and neighboring areas in Central Florida.
WHAT IS BREAST AUGMENTATION (Implants)?
Breast augmentation, sometimes called a boob job, is a procedure that enlarges the breasts by placing silicone implants or saline implants behind the breast tissue or under the pectoral muscle. Breast augmentation is typically done through two incisions in the fold of the breast, around the areola, or under the arm, leaving minimal scars that naturally fade over time.
HOW CAN BREAST AUGMENTATION (Implants) ENHANCE MY APPEARANCE?
Breast augmentation surgery is commonly performed to improve and enhance the overall size and shape of the chest and breasts. Breast augmentation improves the appearance of the breasts by adding size and volume to underdeveloped breasts. The procedure also corrects asymmetrical breasts or chest muscles and streamlines a chest that appears imbalanced.
The breast implant procedure may be performed to restore lost fullness, volume, and contour following pregnancy or extreme weight loss and may replace volume lost as a result of a mastectomy or injury to the breast tissue. Some patients may also opt to have a breast lift in combination with breast augmentation to achieve optimal rejuvenation of the breast area.
BREAST AUGMENTATION (Implants) PROCEDURES
Breast implant surgery, like any surgical procedure, is personally tailored to each patient, and you may choose from various options to achieve your desired results. Our expert staff can help you make the most suitable choice considering your individual body type, age, gender, concern, and lifestyle. During your initial consultation, we will discuss your surgical options and the types of breast implants you may choose from, such as:
- Material: You may choose between saline or silicone breast implants, sometimes called gummy bear breast implants, depending on your individual preference and condition. Dr. Novo will recommend the most appropriate type of implant to give you the most natural-looking breast volume results. Currently, The FDA approves silicone gel implants for patients over the age of 22
- Projection profile: Breast implants come in high, medium, or low projection profiles. The projection profile determines how far your new breasts will project from your chest.
- Shape: Silicone or saline breast implants may be round or teardrop-shaped, and Dr. Novo will recommend the most suitable for your body type as well as your desired breast shape.
- Position: The implant may be positioned either on top of or underneath the pectoral muscle in the chest
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION (Implants)?
Breast augmentation surgery may be performed in patients over the age of 18 who are in good health and have no contraindicated conditions for this procedure. You may be a good candidate for this surgical procedure if you have concerns about the size of your breasts and are looking to boost your self-confidence through looking your best in whatever you choose to wear.
Good candidates for breast enlargement surgery have realistic expectations for the surgery and have maintained a healthy, stable weight. Dr. Novo may recommend that you quit smoking before undergoing this or any other surgical or invasive procedure.
DOES BREAST AUGMENTATION (Implants) CORRECT SAGGING BREASTS?
Breast augmentation as a stand-alone cosmetic surgery most often does not correct the sagging of the breasts. Although in smaller breast sizes with mild sagging (or ptosis), the added volume of an implant alone may improve the appearance. If you want to simultaneously correct sagging while increasing size and volume, combining breast augmentation with a breast lift procedure may be the ideal body contouring solution for you.
RECOVERY FROM BREAST AUGMENTATION (Implants) SURGERY
Since every breast enhancement surgery is tailored to each patient, the recovery process varies between breast augmentation patients and may be affected by factors such as your age, gender, and general lifestyle, as well as the extent of the procedure or combination of procedures, such as a breast augmentation and breast lift, that you undergo.
During recovery after breast surgery, patients may experience mild discomfort for two to three days after the procedure, accompanied by a feeling of tightness in the skin. Women may be required to wear a surgical bra while men will wear a compression shirt to protect delicate tissue and assist the body in adapting to its new contour while minimizing the appearance of scar tissue. In some cases, drainage tubes will be placed under the skin to collect any excess fluid.
Most patients who undergo breast augmentation surgery are able to resume non-strenuous normal activities after a few days. Over the course of a few weeks, once the post-operative swelling subsides, your results will become fully visible, and you may resume more vigorous activities and return to work.
Our staff and Dr. Novo will be on hand to support you throughout your recovery process, providing verbal and written instructions for your recovery that you must follow faithfully in order to achieve optimal results.
IS BREAST FEEDING POSSIBLE AFTER BREAST AUGMENTATION (Implants)?
Happily, the answer to this question is “yes!” In the majority of cases, a breast augmentation procedure will not interfere with your ability to breastfeed.
HOW LONG DO BREAST IMPLANTS LAST?

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Novo and our staff of specialists will help you identify indications of any potential problems that may indicate a need to replace or reposition one or both implants.
