Dermal fillers, also called injectable fillers, are non-surgical treatments that rejuvenate one’s appearance by correcting such conditions as sagging skin, sunken facial contours, creases, folds, lines, wrinkles, and thin lips. Dermal fillers come in different formulas, targeting specific problems. These treatments provide natural-looking results that may last up to two years. Options include Juvederm, Voluma, Volbella, Sculptra, Restylane, Radiesse, and more. You may select one or a combination of injectable fillers, or you may combine them with other procedures such as Botox, Dysport, Kybella, laser resurfacing, or facial surgery.
Dermal fillers are a great alternative or addition to more invasive surgical procedures to provide rejuvenating results. These treatments are minimally invasive and provide immediate results that often continue to improve over time, naturally and gradually. Dermal fillers are administered quickly and safely and require minimal downtime, so they are extremely popular and convenient. Injectable treatments typically take under an hour to administer. Some patients may require follow-up treatments, and some treatments produce increased gradual results. Bruising and swelling are common for up to one-week post-treatment.
Facial aging is a “multiple tissue issue” – There is loss of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. There is also loss of fat, muscle tone, and bone. This changes the dimensions and contours of our faces. Almost any adult man or woman in good health with any of the following skin concerns may benefit from an injectable dermal filler treatment, assuming no contraindicated conditions exist.
Little to no preparation is required for dermal filler injections. However, you may have to suspend certain medications, particularly those that affect blood clotting, such as aspirin, NSAIDs, or blood thinners, and blood thinning supplements such as fish oil for one week in preparation for treatment. If you have any skin reaction or irritation, such as cold sores, cysts, pimples, rashes, hives, or an infection, treatment may have to be delayed until symptoms have subsided and the infection is cleared up. If you have a history of herpes (cold sores, fever blisters), please inform us prior to your treatment.
A topical anesthetic cream will be applied for 30 to 60 minutes to minimize discomfort during your treatment. Injectable fillers are administered through a very fine-gauge needle or micro-cannula and delivered to the outermost layers of skin to treat surface imperfections, while delivery to the deep, innermost layers treats deeper folds and creases. The filler may also be placed over bone for a contouring and lifting effect. The filler is injected into strategic target areas to treat individual concerns. Some patients report a slight stinging sensation during the procedure and may experience some soreness immediately following treatment. Some bruising and swelling are commonly seen for up to one-week post-filler. Sometimes, a follow-up appointment at 2 weeks reveals the need for additional filler for optimal results.
Do not massage or manipulate the area unless the filler is Sculptra. Minimize touching areas treated. It is normal to have asymmetry in the post-treatment week. It is also normal to feel a “firmness” or bump in your injection area for up to a few weeks after treatment. Over time, the area will soften. It is normal to feel some soreness in the treated area. Take Tylenol or Ibuprofen as needed. Please call if you have significant pain or scab or a sore.
Injectable treatments vary widely in cost, depending on the product and treatment areas. To manage the cost of treatments, Dermatology + Plastic Surgery accepts various forms of payment.
