Depending on your specific problem areas, there are several body contouring procedures that may be ideal to tighten and tone the body after significant weight loss following bariatric surgery. At Dermatology + Plastic Surgery, led by double board-certified plastic surgeon Rebecca Novo, MD, and board-certified dermatologist Anita Saluja, MD, body contouring procedures are performed with excellent results on residents of Melbourne, Viera, Brevard County, and the surrounding communities of Central Florida.
Body contouring may be achieved by any of a variety of procedures that eliminate pockets of excess fat and/or loose and sagging skin from anywhere on the body to create a smooth and streamlined contour. Body contouring may consist of minimally invasive techniques, or it may extend to surgical procedures.
Body contouring procedures are suitable for patients who have achieved a stable weight including those who have lost significant weight through diet and exercise, and those who have undergone bariatric surgery. Ideal candidates are those who have maintained a stable, healthy weight for at least a year. The reason for this is that in people whose weight is constantly fluctuating, the results of the procedure may be affected, increasing the likelihood of needing follow-up treatments.
Post-bariatric patients often have a history of weight-related medical problems that will require clearance from the patient’s physician before undergoing any procedures. Additionally, our medical team will assess your condition and make any pertinent recommendations to help you prepare for the procedure. Patients must be nicotine-free for a minimum of six weeks prior to and after any elective surgical procedure. You may also be advised to suspend alcoholic beverages as well as certain medications in preparation for surgery. Body contouring is only possible after weight loss has been accomplished and the body has been at a healthy stable weight for over a year.
You may experience some soreness and swelling, as well as tightness in the skin, immediately following the procedure, but these symptoms will naturally diminish after a few days. You will have to wear compression garments to support your new shape, reduce swelling, and protect healing tissue from impact while accelerating the healing process. You can expect to resume office work and light activities within one to two weeks. Our office will provide precise care instructions regarding physical activities, including when you can resume exercise and sexual activity. Our staff will be on hand throughout your recovery process to provide support and information.
Post-bariatric body contouring may involve various procedures, and costs will vary. Since most health insurance providers will not cover body contouring, our office is happy to offer a flexible financing plan as well as flexible payment options for all of our patients’ convenience.
